Like Natural Quarried Slate, Clay tile is incredibly heavy - 1000-1500 pounds or more per 100 square feet depending on the thickness and material used to make the tile. Considering the average weight of a modern shingle roof is 200-300 pounds for the same sized area that is a ton!

Traditional clay roofing tile requires regular inspection and it often cannot be walked on without possibly damaging it. It also requires prompt repair of broken or missing tiles. Not to mention careful cleaning to remove debris, moss, and algae. Regular application of sealants. All of this maintenance and more just to keep your roof functioning and dry inside - all by a very specialized, niche, expensive trade company.
